Edge AI refers to artificial intelligence processing that happens directly on the device — in this case, on the surveillance camera itself — rather than on remote servers or cloud platforms. An Edge AI camera contains a neural processing unit (NPU) or AI accelerator built into its SoC chipset that runs machine learning models locally. This means the camera can detect objects, recognize patterns, count people, read license plates, and trigger alerts without ever sending raw video to an external server. The result is faster response times, reduced bandwidth consumption, enhanced privacy, and continued operation even when network connectivity is interrupted.
Cloud-based video analytics require streaming video from cameras to centralized servers for processing. This creates several challenges: high bandwidth usage as every camera streams continuously, processing latency of seconds to minutes depending on server load, complete system failure if the server or network connection goes down, and significant infrastructure costs for GPU servers and storage. Edge AI eliminates these issues by processing at the source. Adiance cameras with ArcisAI send only metadata and alert notifications over the network — a fraction of the bandwidth. Analytics responses are near-instantaneous since processing happens locally. And each camera operates independently, so a network interruption does not disable the entire analytics system.
ArcisAI is Adiance proprietary Edge AI analytics platform embedded in our camera firmware. It provides a suite of intelligent analytics that run on-device across our 3MP to 5MP camera range. Key capabilities include people counting with directional tracking for retail footfall and occupancy monitoring, vehicle detection and classification for parking management and traffic analysis, ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) for access control and law enforcement, intrusion detection with configurable zones and real-time alerting, face detection for VIP recognition and access management, and object left or removed detection for security sensitive environments. All analytics run simultaneously without impacting video recording quality or frame rate.
Edge AI cameras serve diverse applications across industries. Retail stores use people counting and heat mapping to optimize store layouts and staffing. Smart cities deploy traffic analytics and crowd monitoring for urban management and public safety. Warehouses and logistics facilities use perimeter intrusion detection and vehicle tracking to secure operations. Banking and finance institutions deploy face detection for VIP customer recognition and security alerting. Educational campuses implement occupancy monitoring and restricted area detection. Healthcare facilities use people counting for patient flow management and PPE compliance detection. Each deployment benefits from real-time local processing without additional server infrastructure costs.
Adiance offers ArcisAI Edge AI analytics as a standard feature across our OEM camera range at no additional licensing cost. Security integrators and distributors who white-label Adiance cameras get built-in AI analytics with their own branding. The ArcisAI interface can be customized with your brand colors and logo. Analytics dashboards can be configured for your specific vertical market requirements. This means your branded cameras compete with premium AI camera brands while maintaining competitive OEM pricing.
